Innovation and Technology

INNOVATIVE APPROACH  Ongoing research conducted at ISF is the basis for the innovation behind the design of the unique equipment at our facility. Our partnerships have enabled the implementation of technologically advanced activities designed to engage athletes, improve motor skills and facilitate information processing

Research

Ongoing research is key to the innovation behind the programs at ISF.  Alex Lopez, our founder and CEO, is a professor of Occupational Therapy at NYIT.  Alex’s ongoing research on activities that improve motor skills and increase the ability to participate in sports activities and live healthy lifestyles has provided the innovation to make the ISF facility truly unique.  Alex has enlisted the help of individuals across many different fields (academic institutions, bio-medical engineers, anatomists, electrical engineers, cell biologists, computer scientists, neuroscientists, etc.) This collaboration has enabled ISF to become a state-of-the-art facility that is constantly adapting and improving to push the boundaries of expected abilities.

Research and Development

ISF offers a unique and innovative approach to occupational therapy (OT) designed to help children develop the skills they need to perform daily activities and engage in play. Our outcomes-oriented approach combines the warmth of dedicated practitioners with the latest technology. Here are some examples:

  • Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR): VR and AR technology allows children to practice functional skills in a virtual environment. For example, a child with sensory processing difficulties can experience different textures and sensations in a controlled, safe environment. VR and AR can also be used to simulate real-life scenarios and help children learn how to navigate new environments. It can be used to improve sensorimotor and functional performance.

  • Sensory Integration Equipment: Sensory integration equipment, such as swings, therapy balls, and weighted blankets, can provide sensory input and help children regulate their sensory systems. These tools can improve a child’s attention, behavior, and participation in daily activities.

  • Wearable technology: Wearable technology, such as fitness trackers and smartwatches, can provide valuable information about a child’s physical activity levels, heart rate, and energetics. This data can be used to help children set goals and track their progress, as well as to identify any potential health concerns.

  • Strength and conditioning programs: Strength and conditioning programs designed specifically for children can help improve their athletic performance while reducing the risk of injury. These programs typically focus on building strength, flexibility, and agility through appropriate exercises for a child’s age and development level.

  • Mind-body techniques: Mind-body techniques, such as yoga and meditation, are increasingly used to help children improve their sports performance and overall fitness levels. These practices can help children develop greater focus, reduce stress and anxiety, and improve their balance and flexibility.

Innovations and technology have greatly expanded the tools and approaches available to practitioners working with children with different abilities. ISF is driven to provide the latest research and development and pave the way for innovations that will further improve the effectiveness of OT interventions.

Benefits of exercise for individuals with different abilities

There is growing evidence to suggest that exercise can be beneficial for individuals with autism. Here are some potential benefits:

  • Improves physical health: Regular exercise can help improve overall physical health, such as reducing the risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes.

  • Enhances social skills: Exercise programs that involve group activities can help individuals with autism improve their social skills by providing opportunities for social interaction with peers.

  • Reduces anxiety and stress: Exercise has been shown to reduce anxiety and stress in individuals with autism, which can help improve their overall quality of life.

  • Improves motor skills: Many individuals with autism have difficulty with motor skills. Exercise can help improve coordination, balance, and other motor skills.

  • Enhances mood and self-esteem: Regular exercise has been shown to enhance mood and self-esteem in individuals with autism.

  • Reduces challenging behaviors: Exercise can help reduce challenging behaviors such as aggression, self-injury, and disruptive behavior in individuals with autism.

  • Improves sensory processing: Many individuals with autism have sensory processing difficulties. Exercise can help improve sensory integration and reduce sensory overload.

Elite Training Program

ISF offers an Elite Running Program designed for exceptional athletes looking to take their training to the next level. Our staff includes practitioners with a comprehensive understanding of the athlete’s individual needs. With careful planning and regular monitoring, it is possible to design a training program that can help your athlete reach their full potential. ISF has unique equipment designed to engage even the most skeptical of participants. We have treadmills specifically designed for our clients. Additionally, we have one of the fastest-moving treadmills on Long Island.

High-speed Running Program

High-speed treadmill training can be an effective way to improve your athlete’s overall fitness and prowess. We use a number of strategies to engage and advance our athlete’s performance. The intensity of high-speed treadmill training varies depending on the individual’s fitness level, motivation, and goals. It can involve short, intense bursts of sprinting or longer sessions of sustained running at high speed. Our program is designed to:

  • Advance speed and agility skills;
  • Boost endurance;
  • Increased cardiovascular fitness;
  • Foster motor control proficiency and versatility;
  • Increased muscle strength and postural stability; and:
  • Promote mental health and wellness.

High-speed treadmill training can offer several benefits, including improved cardiovascular fitness, increased calorie burn, and improved endurance. It can also help to strengthen the muscles in the legs, hips, and core. However, it is important to use proper form and technique while on the treadmill to avoid injury.
